ASHRAE San Diego October Webinar Meeting

Energy Efficient Cooling for AI Data Centers: Moving Beyond Traditional HVAC

The ASHRAE San Diego Chapter invites you to an educational webinar exploring the latest developments in energy-efficient cooling for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. As AI and high-performance computing continue to drive unprecedented cooling demands, traditional HVAC systems are reaching their practical limits. The discussion will highlight ASHRAE's involvement in advancing data center cooling technologies and industry guidance, including the work of ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 (Mission Critical Facilities, Data Centers, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment) and ASHRAE's data center conference, which brings together industry professionals to share research, best practices, and emerging technologies.

This webinar is offered free of charge through the public utility and our Government Affairs committee! This webinar is hosted through the San Diego LEARN Platform.

Description:

Artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are rapidly transforming data center design, with AI racks now reaching 120 to 150+ kW per rack and pushing conventional air cooling systems to their practical limits. Through a real-world case study, this webinar will examine how liquid cooling is being implemented in high-density AI environments, including Cooling Distribution Units (CDUs), warm-water cooling, chilled water distribution, controls, redundancy, leak detection, and commissioning. The presentation will also highlight emerging cooling technologies and demonstrate how higher cooling water temperatures can improve energy efficiency, reduce mechanical cooling requirements, and create greater opportunities for free cooling.

Attendees Will Learn:

• What ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 covers
• How increasing AI computing densities are changing data center cooling requirements.
• The fundamentals and practical applications of liquid cooling and cooling distribution units (CDUs).
• How warm-water cooling and higher operating temperatures can improve energy efficiency.
• Key considerations for chilled water distribution, controls, redundancy, leak detection and commissioning.
