A New Look at Variable Primary Flow and Primary Secondary Pumping in Chiller Plants with Brazed Plate Evaporators
Welcome to the second program for 2023/2024 calendar of events.
The San Diego Chapter of ASHRAE is excited to announce that we will be hosting Don Brandt for a discussion on variable primary flow primary secondary pumping in chiller plants with brazed plate evaporators.
For those who sign up, you have the option to attend in person or join us remotely. Following registration, a Microsoft Teams invitation with remote login information will be sent to those who cannot attend in person giving them the option to join us online.
When: Tuesday 10/10/2023 11:30am – 1:00pm

He has held the positions of Sales Engineer, Sales Manager, Trainer, Facility Manager and Controls Project Manager/Engineer. During his tenure with Trane, he worked in the Wilkes-Barre-Allentown, PA and Phoenix, AZ Sales Offices. I retired from Trane on Aug 1, 2013. Don is an ASHRAE and IEEE Life Member and teaches a CEM-AEE Prep Course, in addition to being a CEM. At ASHRAE, he has served at the Chapter, Regional and Society Levels, including DRC for Region X from 2002-2005, Standards Committee from 2005 -2009, Nominating Committee 2010-2016, Society Vice President (2020 – 2022), Chair of Publication and Education Council, and Finance Committee Member. He has also served on three Presidential Ad Hoc Committees in the past three years. He received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award in 2005 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2015 along with being a member of the Task Force on Building Decarbonization in 2021-2022. He is was on the Society Board of Directors (2017 – 2020) and was Chair of the Society Rules Committee (2018) at ASHRAE. He is also an instructor for the ASHRAE “HVAC Design Essentials” both in the US and internationally. He is the author of the new “Fundamentals of Psychrometrics, 2nd edition” both IP and SI, that are part of the ASHRAE SDL series of courses published in Jan and Aug of 2016 respectively.

A New Look at Variable Primary Flow and Primary Secondary Pumping in Chiller Plants with Brazed Plate Evaporators
With the introduction of Zeotropic Refrigerant Blends on all types of HVAC equipment and the upcoming increase in lower GWP A2L refrigerants, we need to have a better understanding about the flow requirements through this style of chiller evaporator. Shell and tube evaporator heat exchangers have been used for many years and adopted to variable flow applications in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s on larger centrifugal chillers with the help of microprocessor controllers. Brazed Plate evaporators present some challenges that the designer must understand in both air cooled and water cooled chillers. We will see actual selections to fully absorb this knowledge.
